In the field of ebook development, the ideals are clear–one open standard format, universally accepted–but the reality is harshly different. Despite the existence of common standards, ebook designers and developers must still deal with device fragmentation, diverse vendor requirements, and mediocre adherence to the specs while striving to create nicely designed, responsive ebooks. In this follow up to last year’s panel discussion on Standards in ebook Development, we’ll explore what’s changed in the past year–are we any closer to the elusive ebook unicorn, the one format to rule them all? And if nothing’s changed, is it time to accept reality and/or create a new ideal?
