The ebook developer’s toolbox

  • March 31, 2016
Developing beautiful, functional electronic books for a wide variety of reading platforms (from eInk devices to smartphones, tablets, and desktops) requires a unique combination of technical knowledge in both traditional publishing typesetting (typography, paged layout) and modern web standards (HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript). In this talk, Sanders demonstrates some of the essential software apps, development techniques, and programming skills that should be in every ebook developer's toolbox. Topics will include harnessing the power of your XML editor, automated markup post-processing with XSLT, regular expressions and their limitations, manipulating the DOM with JavaScript, responsive ebook design, debugging in the browser, the accessibility imperative, and more.
