Book industry professionals have a responsibility to ensure that the books they create, sell, and promote represent human experiences and identities accurately and respectfully. Meet wâsikan kisewâtisiwin, a writing tool that goes beyond grammar and spell check to assist non-Indigenous people in their efforts to write about Indigenous Peoples. Developed through a partnership between Indigenous organization pipikwan pêhtâkwan and Alberta’s Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii), this tool corrects unconscious bias or racism in written material, identifying problematic statements and replacing them with factual information about First Peoples. Learn how wâsikan kisewâtisiwin can help anyone handling content about Indigenous Peoples at any stage of the publishing cycle — from acquisitions, editorial, and marketing teams, to supporting the work of sensitivity readers — to ensure that only accurate and respectful content reaches readers.
